59-Year-Old Man Fatally Struck, Suspected DUI Driver Arrested Near Fallbrook

The bicyclist was hit by a suspected DUI driver in the middle of the day.

A 59-year-old man was struck and killed in the middle of the afternoon Tuesday near Fallbrook. The teenage driver now faces felony DUI charges, California Highway Patrol officers said.

Sulem Areli Garcia, 19, was driving on Old Highway 395, south of Pala Mesa Drive at an unknown speed when she began to veer to the right.

Her car hit the man from Fallbrook as he was riding his bicycle on the right shoulder at about 3 p.m., said CHP officers.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Garcia was not injured in the crash, according to CHP. She was arrested at the scene and will be booked into the Vista Detention Facility.

She faces felony charges including DUI and vehicular manslaughter.

CHP officers said the collision remains under investigation.
