A Marine sergeant assigned to Camp Pendleton's 1st Marine Special Operations Battalion has been killed in Afghanistan, the North County Times reported.

Sgt. Charles I. Cartwright, 26, of Union Bridge, Md., died Saturday in the country's southwestern Farah province, the Defense Department said.

Details surrounding his death were not immediately available. The only information was that he was involved in "combat operations" when he was killed.

Cartwright joined the Marine Corps one day before the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and was trained as a reconnaissance man, the paper reported.

He had two previous combat assignments in Iraq.
