Sex Offenders Resign From Gay Pride Event

SAN DIEGO -- Two volunteers and a staffer working on this weekend's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Pride Festival have given up their roles at the event after police and community groups threatened to pull out.Several law enforcement agencies told organizers they would have to boycott the parade if the three were involved because their criminal pasts. The event's board announced Wednesday that the sex offenders had resigned. The Pride board also agreed to develop better screening procedures for volunteers and staff who work at the event.The criminal backgrounds of the two volunteers were made public two weeks ago by James Hartline, a conservative Christian activist who opposes the Pride festival, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported. The staffer later disclosed his conviction to festival officials, according to the paper.
About 1,100 volunteers work on the annual Pride festival. The three-day festival begins Friday and includes a parade through Hillcrest on Saturday.
