Students work out math problems during a class for Hispanic adults, Wednesday, March 16, 2005, at Cary High School in Cary, N.C. Even among Hispanics 16-to-19 who were educated entirely in the United States, 15 percent nationally are dropouts, compared with 12 percent for blacks and 8 percent for whites. Here's the most interesting education statistic of the day: About 100 of California's more than 2,000 high schools account for 40 percent of all high school dropouts.
This appears in a fascinating Sacramento Bee story about efforts to address the dropout problems. In particular, the state is working on a data system that will make it easier to track individual students. But there have been delays.
