We've heard this before, but state leaders says it's really true this time. Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg says he, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, and other state leaders have reached an agreement on a budget deal.
Can you cry wolf on a budget?
It was just last week the governor enigmatically announced the so-called Big Five (himself and legislative leaders) had reached a "framework for agreement "on a budget. We didn't really know what that meant, but it didn't appear to mean very much after budget negotiations completely broke down just a couple days later.
But they're back at it again, saying the budget stalemate, which has now reached 94-days, is over.
If it's true the devil is in the details, we still haven't seen Lucifer. We don't know who blinked here: the GOP which fought against tax hikes, or the Dems, who battled additional cuts.
That kind of information should start leaking out in the coming days. In the meantime, Mr. Steinberg says the budget should come to a floor vote by Thursday, Oct. 7.
That would be on the 99th day of the impasse.
