In any other offseason, Corey Smith's name would have casually slid under the radar. A seven-year veteran of the NFL, the last three seasons of which he spent in Detroit, Smith became a free agent on Feb. 27.
Yet there was no stir over his options, no fuss over which team would take a chance on him. Heck, FanHouse's Free Agency Tracker doesn't even list Smith's name. He was, save for diehard Lions fans, a nearly-unknown member of the league. The same could be said, and then some for Marquis Cooper. He played for six different teams since joining the NFL in 2004, yet you would have been hard-pressed to find a fan that recognized his face.
