Phil Mickelson Gives San Diego Kids a Smart Start

The Pro-Golfer hopes to raise kid's self-esteem

Pro-golfer Phil Mickelson and his wife Amy made sure 1500 San Diego County kids start the new school year off on the right foot.

On Saturday, the Mickelsons held their 6th annual Smart Start shopping party at the Wal-Mart in Murphy Canyon.

Mickelson says he and his family are just happy to help out and get the kids excited for the coming school year.

"[We] get them new pairs of pants and shirts and shoes and school supplies, socks, underwear the whole works, so that they start the school year feeling confident and hopefully with a higher self esteem," Mickelson said.

The Mickelsons foot the bill for all of the supplies, including the 50 to 60 buses to that brought the kids to the event.

Mickelson's sponsor, KPMG provided each child with a Dr. Seuss book.

"My wife and I do it because it is fun. It is fun for us to be a part of this, to see the looks on the kids faces," Mickelson said.
