PETCO Park: Field of Dreams

After years of setting high goals, Alex Montoya scored a job with the Padres

The childhood dream of Alex Montoya was to work for the San Diego Padres. Montoya faced a number of obstacles, being born with only one full leg and no arms. But after years of setting high goals for himself, he now has his "dream job."

Montoya was born in Colombia. His parents sent him San Diego when he was 4 years-old to live with an aunt in the hopes he could take advantage of better medical care and better schools.

His physical limitations shaped his character growing up.  "I couldn't  hold a bat, so I couldn't play baseball," said Montoya. "I couldn't hold a football or a basketball.  It made me rely on the principle to rely on what I had and not on what I was missing."

Committed to fulfilling his goal and work in sports, Montoya took a second job as a part time usher for the San Diego Padres.  That job lasted seven  years but the strategy of taking an entry level position worked.

Montoya is now the Director of Latino Relations for the San Diego Padres.  He recently wrote a book titled "Swinging from the Fences" that deals with his life's lessons and the challenges he's overcome.

"If you have the right attitude in life, you can overcome anything," said Montoya.
