Chargers' First Practice β€” Who's Missing?

First day of training camp

The Chargers have their first full practice Friday at the Chargers’ headquarters on Murphy Canyon.

On Sunday, the Chargers will have their first team practice open to the public from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. On Friday and Saturday, the practice will only be open to selected season ticket holders by invitation only, said a member of the Chargers' front office staff.

Four team members did not show up to Friday's practice, rookie running back Ryan Matthews, receiver Vincent Jackson, left tackle Marcus McNeill, and outside linebacker Shawne Merriman. The four holdouts are waiting to show up to practice until after ther contracts have been finalized.

During a press conference on Friday, Coach Turner said he had hoped Merriman would show up to practice.

The North County Times reports contract talks for Jackson, McNeill, and Merriman have stopped.

The Chargers already finalized a five-year contract extension with tight end Antonio Gates for $7.2 million a year, with $20 million guaranteed.

McNeill was right behind Gates in terms of long-term contract priority, the paper said.
