Aztecs Win MWC Football Championship

SDSU beats Air Force 27-24 in conference title game

It's been a long time since San Diego State won an outright conference championship. It was 1986 when they won the Western Athletic Conference title by a game over B-Y-U, who the next season would bring in a freshman quarterback named Ty Detmer.

I don't know if it was worth that long a wait but it still has to feel good to Aztec nation.

San Diego State beat Air Force 27-24 to win their 20th conference championship. Redshirt freshman quarterback Christian Chapman made his first career college start and played extremely well, completing nine of 14 passes for 203 yards and a touchdown but more importantly, he was not sacked and didn't turn the ball over.

Running back Donnel Pumphrey had 154 all-purpose yards and caught Chapman's scoring pass. Kicker Donny Hageman made both of his field goal tries including the game-winning 46-yarder with 5:10 to play in the game.

The Aztecs have won nine straight games, their longest winning streak since taking 10 in a row bridging the 1976 and 1977 seasons. They'll find out on Sunday afternoon where they play their 6th straight bowl game.
