Aztecs Stay West For NCAA Tournament

SDSU baseball team going to Oregon for regional game against LSU

The last time the San Diego State baseball team was a #3 seed in an NCAA Tournament regional was 2009 when they went up to Irvine and had Stephen Strasburg on the mound.

Since then they’ve been to a regional four times, each time as a #4 seed. In 2018 the only team from the Mountain West Conference to make the 64-team field got a little more respect from the selection committee.

But that doesn’t mean their road to Omaha is any easier.

SDSU is headed to the Corvallis, OR, regional and will open up with national powerhouse LSU, a program that’s won six national titles and been to Omaha, NE (the site of the College World Series) three of the last five years. That game is set for 1:00 p.m. on Friday afternoon.

If the Aztecs can get through the Tigers they’ll very likely get a shot at Oregon St., the host school and the 2nd-ranked team in the nation. The Beavers play the 4th-seeded Northwestern State Demons in Friday’s nightcap.

It’s a double-elimination tournament and the winner will move on to the Super Regional, which is a best-of-3 game series that determines who earns one of eight spots in Omaha for the College World Series. San Diego State has never in its history advanced past the regional stage.
