Sports blog start-up Bleacher Report sold for a reported $175 million to Turner Broadcasting System on Monday, according to SFGate.
Bleacher Report, started by two Menlo Middle School friends, gives Turner access to a niche, lucrative demographic among sports fans. It also gives them a major online and mobile outlet for its premium sports content.
Bleacher Report gets a megaphone of a distribution network and video from the NBA, PGA, NCAA and other leagues, as well as exposure on CNN, TNT and TBS cable networks.
The blog generates 900 million page views a month, according to The Gate, and has 1 million mobile app downloads.
The newslettering that Bleacher Report specialized in could be an avenue for exclusive interview or other content, giving a potential revenue stream. Opt-in subscription lists are highly valued among media companies.
