Freeway Closed to Move Nuke Equipment

A 640-ton piece of nuclear equipment caused a partial shutdown of the Interstate 5 on Wednesday night.

The massive steam generator, which made its scheduled journey at about midnight, was taken from Las Pulgas Road and traveled nearly a mile down the freeway. Moving the apparatus required the California Highway Patrol to close the southbound freeway at 9 p.m., leaving only one lane open into early Thursday morning.

Installation of the steam generator, along with four others, will begin in September at the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station.
