North County City Sharpens Budget Knife

The Carlsbad City Council is considering cutting millions of dollars from the city's current spending plan.

The proposed $5.3 million in cuts are in response to a difficult economic climate and declining city revenue. They will be spread across all departments. Targets include park maintenance and non-emergency police response times.

Overtime hours, travel costs and training expenses are all on the chopping block as well, but employee layoffs are not planned. Instead, a selective hiring freeze will be instituted.
