Three people were treated for smoke inhalation after a fire in the Peach Tree Inn on F Street.
Just before 5 a.m., San Diego Fire-Rescue crews were called to the basement of the building just before 5 a.m.
The fire was started in a dumpster and didn't do much damage but smoke filled four floors of the building above, officials said.
Residents of the apartment building were evacuated. Three people needed medical attention for minor injuries, officials said.
