A 91-year-old man was killed and a 79-year-old woman was badly injured in a crash Sunday morning in Carlsbad.
The accident happened around 9:30 a.m. in the 2700 block of Monroe Street. A car crossed into the opposite lane, kept going and rammed into trees on the side of the road, according to the Carlsbad Police Department. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.
The 91-year-old man, who was the passenger, was pronounced dead at the scene. The 79-year-old female driver was taken to Scripps La Jolla Hospital with major injuries, according to police.
Officials have not released the victim’s name or what caused the driver to veer off course. They do not believe alcohol played a role in the crash.
Monroe Street between Marron Road and Hospital Way was closed for several hours after the accident.
