Driver Killed in Fiery Crash Along State Route 76 in Bonsall

A driver was killed when his car veered off a Bonsall area highway, crashed into a concrete wall and ignited in flames Monday afternoon, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) said.

The man was driving a Lexus on westbound State Route 76 when he rear-ended a woman's Chevrolet at about 3:45 p.m.

The collision sent the Lexus off the roadway and down a dirt embankment where the car crashed into a concrete drainage wall, CHP said.

At that point, the car caught fire and quickly became fully engulfed with smoke.

The driver was not able to escape and died in the vehicle, CHP said. He has not yet been identified by the Medical Examiner's Office.

The driver of the Chevrolet stayed at the scene and talked with CHP. Investigators were still working to determine what caused the collision.
