Declawed Bears Find New Home in San Diego County

A family of bears, who had been transferred from place to place, now has a forever home in San Diego County.

The four bears arrived at the Lions, Tigers and Bears animal sanctuary in Alpine on Wednesday after a weeklong cross-country road trip.

The bears – two Silvertip Grizzlies named Albert and Cherry Bomb and two Himalayan black bears named Teddy and Baloo – were born at roadside zoos in North Carolina, according to Lions, Tigers and Bears. Most recently, they were living in the backyard of a private home.

The bears had all been declawed, according to the sanctuary.

The furry passengers traveled cross-country in an air conditioned trailer. Veronica Cruz with Lions, Tigers and Bears said the bears did well sleeping, eating and drinking plenty of water during the trip.
