San Diego County has a new mobile and tablet app designed to be a one-stop resource during disasters, officials announced Thursday.
The free app, SDEmergency, compiles news, emergency maps, notifications and planning guides for smart phones and iPads.
To download the app, click here or search for "SDEmergency" in Android Google Play or in the Apple App Store.
During disasters such as last year's blackout, many people turned to their mobile phones for assistance and information, using Twitter to get updated information from county agencies.
County Supervisor Ron Roberts said the app should come in handy before, during and after emergencies. In addition to basic contact information during disasters, it also features tabs for each type of disaster with guides for how to prepare and interactive maps for emergency shelters.
Roberts demonstrated the app's capabilities Thursday, the day officials launched the app for public use.
Mayor Jerry Sanders has also compiled a list of news, law enforcement, and public agency Twitter handles for updates during emergencies. Click here to subscribe to the list on Twitter.
