Car Careens into Parked Car, Building in Downtown

A driver exiting a San Diego highway into downtown collided with a parked car and slammed into a building, flipping onto its side.

Craig Strompf lives in a nearby high-rise condo complex at 10th Avenue and B Street. He said it was about 12:30 a.m. when he heard a loud explosion and the sound of metal being dragged.

Outside his complex, a red Toyota was on its side with a person trapped inside.

β€œI heard a bunch of girls screaming and people running over to the car and it was smoking and they were trying to get the person out but they couldn’t even get in,” he said.

San Diego Police Officers believe the driver was driving at highway speeds when the he lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a parked car, causing the rollover. The vehicle came to rest against a parking garage entry gate.

β€œPeople come flying down here through the red light,” Strompf said.

The driver had to be extricated from his car. He was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, police said.
