Cops: Homeless Man Takes Cement Truck On Joyride

Speeds Topped 90 mph During Pursuit

A homeless man is facing charges after police say he stole a work truck and led authorities on a high-speed chase through East County.

It started around Thursday at 10:30 a.m.  Police said the white 1989 Chevy Silverado was parked at 6th and J streets in downtown San Diego, when the suspect allegedly jumped behind the wheel.

Authorities were able to track the truck down using a GPS device installed on the vehicle.  Police caught up with the truck on Interstate 15, and followed him eastbound on Interstate 8.  Police and the CHP attempted to pull the truck over east of Willows Road, but the driver took off, officials said, at times at speeds of 90 mph.

The chase came to an end in Boulevard.  The CHP, assisted by the Border Patrol, were able to disable the truck on I-8, east of Ribbonwood Road.

The unidentified man was arrested and taken into custody at gunpoint.
