Girl Set 14 Fires: Cops

Witness said she saw teen start Mira Mesa fire Tuesday

An unlikely suspect is in custody, accused of sparking a series of fires, according to police.

A witness saw the 17-year-old setting some shrubs on fire in Mira Mesa at about 4 a.m. on Wednesday and called police, according to investigators. Police said they determined during their investigation that she was responsible for 14 cases of arson, nine of them between 11:30 p.m. Tuesday and 4 a.m. on Wednesday. Investigators believe the other five incidents took place over the past eight days.

She is accused of burning a pair of car covers, damaging both vehicles; a tree in the yard of a residence; a fence in the yard of another residence; and a tarp at a Mira Mesa recreation center. The teen also tried to start six fires in Sandburg Park, officials believe. In all the cases, she is thought to have used cigarette lighters, police said.

Luckily, no one was injured in any of the incidents.

Police said the girl is being hald at juvenile hall on 14 felony counts of arson.
