Coast Guard Intercepts Migrant Boat Off San Clemente Island

The U.S. Coast Guard interdicted 10 suspected migrants east of San Clemente Island Friday night.

Friday afternoon a U.S. Customs and Border Protection aircraft detected a suspected panga, a small fishing boat, carrying 10 people approaching the United States maritime border.

The Coast Guard's Steadfast launched their small boat crew and intercepted the panga without incident.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection Marine Task Force agents took custody of the migrants Saturday morning.

"Maritime trafficking is a threat to national security and harmful to everyone involved," said Capt. Jonathan S. Spaner, commanding officer of Sector San Diego. "I commend the crews on this mission for achieving a safe and effective resolution."
