Man Arrested After Clairemont Multi-Vehicle Crash

A 55-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol after police say he caused a chain-reaction crash that sent five people to the hospital.

Officials say the driver was speeding his 2005 Acura TL south in the 5100 block of Genesee Avenue when he didn't notice that traffic was stopped ahead of him.

The driver rear-ended two vehicles, causing a chain-reaction crash that involved a total of seven vehicles, officials said. The crash happened at about 1:30 p.m. near Appleton Street.

Two people trapped in one of the vehicles were freed from the wreckage, fire officials said.

Five people were taken to the hospital for observation, including the driver of the Acura who suffered a fractured vertabrae.

MTS reported significant delays for bus route 41 because of the collision.
