Uber and Lyft drivers operating at Los Angeles International Airport are now able to pick up new customers immediately after dropping off passengers, a change designed to cut down on traffic and congestion in the terminals.

Previous rules only allowed drivers to perform a single pick-up or drop-off per circuit through the Central Terminal Area, but the "Rematch" system allows drivers who are concluding drop-off trips to immediately pick up new passengers.

LAX officials predict the change will cut down on traffic congestion by reducing the number of overall vehicle trips made into the CTA.

"Traffic reduction is an essential part of improving the guest experience at LAX, and Rematch offers a new way to further reduce the amount of traffic in the CTA," said Keith Wilschetz, Los Angeles World Airports' deputy executive director for operations and emergency management.

Lyft began operations at LAX in December 2015, with Uber following the next month. Both pay LAWA a fee of $4 per pick-up or drop-off at the airport, which is similar to fees paid by other airport transportation providers.
