Sharp Gets $10M Gift

It's a donation for the record book.  Sharp Healthcare has received $10 million to help build a new patient tower at Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego.

Sharp HealthCare says the cash gift is the biggest donation in its history, according to a report in the San Diego Union-Tribune.

The 334-bed building, slated to open by mid-January, will be named the Stephen Birch Healthcare Center in honor of the late philanthropist.  The tower, which is next to the current Sharp Memorial building, includes an expanded surgery center, emergency room and trauma center.

The Birch's are well-known philanthropists, having donated to the Birch Aquarium in La Jolla, the Birch North Park Theatre and a baseball museum at Tony Gwynn Stadium on the campus of San Diego State University, the report said.
