Smokin' in the Park is what you may call Southern California's BBQ Heaven. Over 60 teams from all over the country are coming to our town on Saturday, October 17th to Viejas Casino & Outlet Center from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. to compete for the title of best BBQ. An event sactioned by the best of the best in BBQ, Kansas City Barbeque Society, promises to fill you up, and serve as a good cause. 100% of the proceeds will be donated to our local Alpine School Districts Math and Music Program.
This year they have expanded the event making it fun for everyone of all ages. There will be hundreds of street vendors, a Kid's Zone, farmer's market, beer garden and a microbrew tasting. On top of all this there will be live entertainment all day long on two stages. Performers include The Texas Tornados, Los Lobos, Dave Alvin & the Guilty Women and Karl Denson's Tiny Universe. This event is FREE to the public - both entrance and parking. Also, every attendee will save up to 70% at over 60 brand name stores at the Viejas Outlet Center. Sounds like a combination for the perfect fun filled family day!
The competition is broken up into four different categories: chicken, pork, beef brisket and pork spareribs. The cooking will begin on Friday night at 10 p.m. and lasts all the way until Saturday. The official judging begins on Saturday at noon, but you have the opportunity to be a judge all day long with samples from each vendor. This year they have added a new award that let's us have a vote - the very 1st People's Choice Award. We may not be the experts, but we'll sacrifice our full stomachs to search for the best. The winners will be announced on Saturday at 4 p.m.
Each team is competing for a piece of the total prize purse of $23,000 and a spot at the Jack Daniel's National BBQ Championship, not to mention a year of bragging rights. So make sure to join us and place your vote for best BBQ in the Viejas Smokin' in the Park.
