The NFL granted a 24-hour extension Wednesday in an effort to sell enough tickets and lift the local television blackout of this Sunday's Chargers-Falcons game at Qualcomm Stadium.
The team now has until 1:05 p.m. Friday to sell the remaining 2,000 tickets. But after a streak of 35 consecutive regular-season sell-out games, it's getting tougher to fill the seats.
“I think it is difficult, because we've had so many straight sellouts,” said Jim Steeg, the club's chief operating officer told the San Diego Union-Tribune. “People think sponsors or TV will step up to pick up the balance. They have been saved a number of times in this process. But the number – 2,000 tickets – is significantly high. We're now talking hundreds of thousands of dollars.”
Kickoff is Sunday at 1:05 pm. All general tickets must be sold 72 hours prior to kickoff for NFL games to be televised live locally. The team also said "an equal number of tickets" are available for the Chargers’ nationally-televised home game versus the Oakland Raiders on Dec. 4.
The Chargers record this year is 4-7.
