Calexico and Iron & Wine perform at Humphreys Concerts by the Bay on Friday, Oct. 4.

Sometimes you stumble into really cool events that will never be replicated. A few years back, a friend of mine called me around lunchtime and said that Calexico was playing a show at Lestat's that afternoon. It was some warmup thing for a now-defunct radio station, and living close had its benefits as a couple dozen people got this very intimate and private show while Calexico tested new songs on the crowd. I'd seen them before, and I've seen them since, but nothing endeared them to me quite like that special lunch. Tonight, they'll share the stage at Humphreys with Iron & Wine, and while not quite so intimate, they have no problem filling the night sky with their amazing music. Around town, Hiss Golden Messenger is nearly sold out at the Casbah, metal "Ned-core" band Okilly Dokilly returns to Soda Bar, and rocker misfits Starcrawler play a free show at Vinyl Junkies Record Shop in South Park.
