Serena Advances to Wimbledon Finals

Will face Russian Vera Zvonareva in championship on Saturday

A day after being ousted with her sister in doubles play, Serena Williams moved on to the individual finals with a victory over an unseeded Czech.

The three-time champion bested Petra Kvitova 7-6 (5), 6-2, but needed more than 90 minutes to do it.  On Saturday, Williams, the top seed, will face Vera Zvonareva. Zvonareva reached her first Grand Slam final, rallying to beat Tsvetana Pironkova in three sets. It was Pironkova who knocked Serena Williams sister, Venus, out of the tourney in the quarterfinals.

The 21st-seeded Russian became the second-lowest ranked player to make the Wimbledon womenโ€™s final.

โ€œIโ€™m very excited. I think Iโ€™m not realizing it at the moment,โ€ Zvonareva said after the match.

At least one of the Williams sisters has reached the Wimbledon finals in 10 of the last 11 years and one of them has won eight of the last 10 years. Serena defeated her sister to win last year's championship.
