Pitcher's Brother Killed in Cliff Fall

The younger brother of San Diego Padres pitcher Kevin Correia died in a hiking accident, according to a published report.

Kevin Correia was scratched from his scheduled start in Houston on Sunday after the death of his younger brother in California.

Correia’s brother reportedly fell while hiking with a group of friends Saturday at Potato Harbor on Santa Cruz Island.

Trevor Correia, 21, a student at Santa Barbara City College, fell to a ledge about 60 feet below a cliff according to Channel Islands National Park officials.

A park ranger found Trevor Correia unconscious but breathing on a ledge over 200 feet above the harbor, the Ventura County Star reported Monday.

He was airlifted to an Oxnard hospital where he later died.

Kevin Correia flew from Houston to California Sunday morning after getting the news.

San Diego Padres manager Bud Black said the team would consider later in the week whether to place Correia on the bereavement list.

"It's still so early to know how this is going to sort out," Black said. "I think things will become more clear once we get to San Francisco, how Kevin is doing and what we need to do."
