City: Broken Pipe on Balboa Avenue Was on List of Repairs

The pipe was scheduled to be replaced Monday as a part of a city-wide water main replacement project.

A water main break closed westbound Balboa Avenue where it intersects with Interstate 5 for hours on Friday.

The break occurred during the morning commute on Friday and westbound traffic was diverted to Morena Boulevard. From there, drivers could access I-5 at Clairemont, water officials said.

Crews worked to stop the leak and reopened the intersection just after 3 p.m.

The pipe was scheduled to be replaced Monday as a part of a city-wide water main replacement project.

Crews decided not to repair the pipe Friday but just fixed the road.

The larger project will be tackled in sections so residents in the area should expect some lanes closed to traffic. The repairs are expected to take weeks to complete.

No customers were out of water service.
