Locals looking for someone to check their home while they're traveling this holiday will be happy to know that the San Diego County Sheriff's Department offers a vacation check service.

Officials sent out a reminder about the program for the holiday season, though a dispatcher said it runs throughout the year.

Manned by over 400 Senior Patrol volunteers, the home checks are available to anyone living within the jurisdiction of the Sheriff's department.

The volunteers go through an academy and training in order to join the patrol, according to deputies.

"[The volunteers] will check if your doors, windows and garage are locked. They will also hide your newspapers and packages in your side fence or back patio," according to a media release.

The volunteers may observe and make a citizen's arrest should they deem it necessary and they will then call in a deputy to assist.

What's more, homeowners will return to their residences to find a letter dating each check that was made while they were gone.

Those interested in the home checks can get more information, and a form to sign up, on the Sheriff's website.
