The commander of Destroyer Squadron 1, which is made up of five San Diego-based ships, has been removed from command amid an investigation into an alleged “inappropriate relationship,” according to the U.S. Navy.
Capt. Donald Hornbeck was removed from command on Saturday while operating in the Arabian Sea, according to a statement from the U.S. Navy Third Fleet.
Destroyer Squadron 1 is conducting support for Operations Enduring Freedom and New Dawn on San Diego-based USS Carl Vinson.
Hornbeck has been temporarily assigned to U.S. Third Fleet Headquarters pending the results of the investigation.
Capt. John Steinberger, deputy commander of Destroyer Squadron 1, assumed command.
