Police Chase on I-805 Shuts Down On-Ramp

Driver taken into custody after crashing vehicle

A police chase of a fleeing truck on Interstate 805 ended Monday morning in Sorrento Valley after officers rammed the suspect’s truck, causing it to crash just off the freeway on-ramp.

The Mira Mesa Boulevard/Sorrento Valley Road onramp at the 805 was shut down as of 11:45 a.m., as medics treated the driver and debris was cleared. The driver was then expected to be taken into custody.

The chase started at 11:25 a.m., when the driver refused to stop his truck after a California Highway Patrol officer signaled for him to pull over on north I-805.

The three-runner exited on Mira Mesa Boulevard, then tried to get back on the 805 from Sorrento Valley Road.

That’s when the CHP officer performed a “pit maneuver” on the vehicle, which entails a patrol car tapping the corner rear of a vehicle to cause it to spin and stop.

The maneuver caused the truck to roll and land on its side. Officers surrounded the vehicle until the apparently injured driver managed to free himself.
