The Padres have never played well in Missouri. In their history, they're 74 and 149 against the Cardinals in St. Louis.
So, this weekend's series at Busch Stadium did not give Padres fans much reason to feel optimistic, and that was before taking into consideration the fact the Friars had lost 14 of 16 games, while the Cards had the best record in baseball.
Game 1 went to the Redbirds, 9-6. Jake Westbrook gave up two runs in 6.1 innings to get the win. He also had his first career multi-hit game, going 3-3 at the plate and driving in a run.
Last season, Westbrook had a total of six hits.
Jason Marquis took the loss for the Padres. He got his 9th win on June 15, and hasn't won in six starts since (the Padres have only won one of those outings).
On Saturday the Padres send Edinson Volquez to the mound against Lance Lynn.
