Martin McDermott's family was in mourning even before he passed away.
They wondered what happened to the 'Marty' they once knew. His sister said he struggled in recent years, possibly with mental health issues. She said they tried to get him help but they weren’t sure how.
Last Sunday McDermott’s body was found floating off the coast of Sunset Cliffs and investigators and his family want to know how he got there.
His sister Maggie took to social media in her grief calling her brother her "best friend" and "protector."
Maggie said she’s angry he was not given an opportunity to heal.
McDermott’s family will be in San Diego by the end of the week to say goodbye to a loving brother and generous uncle.
The investigation is ongoing.
