Two varieties of Albertsons brand ice cream have been recalled from Albertsons supermarkets due to potential health risk, the Dean Foods Company of California and Meadow Gold Dairy processing facility announced Wednesday.

According to the companies, the Albertsons brand ice cream flavors “Peanut Butter Cup” and “Peanut Butter Chocolate” in 1.5-quart sizes are being pulled from supermarket freezers in California, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, North Dakota, Oregon, Utah, Wyoming and Washington.

Only those two flavors are included in the recall.

The recall was initiated as a precautionary measure because the ice cream varieties contain a peanut butter ingredient supplied by Nationwide Sunland, Inc., which may be contaminated with Salmonella.

Salmonella can cause serious and fatal infections. Symptoms include, but are not limited to, fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

Dean Foods and Meadow Gold said no complaints have been reported thus far regarding these ice cream products. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has been notified of this voluntary recall.

The ice cream being recalled was sold between March 26, 2010, and September 25, 2012, in the aforementioned states. The ice cream comes in cardboard cartons and is printed with one of two possible plant codes: “49-11” or “06-20” and a “BEST BY” or “EXP” date ranging from March 26, 2011, to September 25, 2013.

Consumers who have this product should not consume it. They should throw the ice cream away or return the product for a full refund at Albertsons stores.

Consumers with questions about the ice cream recall can call (800) 587-2259 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Central Time, Monday through Friday.
