“Glee” is gaining a rival not only on TV, but also in the music department.

NBC’s upcoming new series, "Smash," has inked an agreement with Columbia Records to release a soundtrack for the show, Entertainment Weekly reported. One of the show’s stars, former “American Idol” contestant Katharine McPhee, is also getting a solo recording deal.

Ironically, Columbia is also the label that has put out the “Glee” albums. Rob Stringer, Columbia/Epic Label Group chairman, said in a statement: "Music is at the heart of “Smash,” and with our wonderfully creative broadcast partners, we will develop innovative strategies to present this music to a huge audience."

According to the EW story, the “Smash” soundtrack will feature original music by Broadway talents Mark Shaiman and Scott Wittman along with renditions of popular tunes. The premise of the TV show is a Broadway musical about the life of Marilyn Monroe. Co-starring with McPhee are Debra Messing and Angelica Houston.

McPhee had previously recorded several albums—her debut record went to Number Two on the Billboard charts four years ago.
