Where to begin? First off, it’s Rocktober, which means a cornucopia of shows to choose from, and it’s capped off with Halloween!
The selections you have to choose from are a myriad of styles, and I have highlighted some of my favorites. I may have missed a few that you would consider worthy, but these are my picks. Hope you like them.
Damn you, Oct. 8 -- too many choices, starting with Peter Gabriel at Valley View Casino Center, the Hives at the House of Blues, Bettye LaVette at Anthology, Divine Fits at 207 inside the Hard Rock Hotel and, finally, Zoobombs at the Soda Bar. I would go to any of these!
Oct. 10: David Byrne and St. Vincent team up at Humphreys Concerts By the Bay.
Oct. 11: We all have to pick between the Raveonettes at the Belly Up, the xx at Soma (sold out) or Grimes at Porter's Pub.
Oct. 13: The Night and Day Music Fest, with G. Love, Donovan Frankenreiter; Weezer at Harrah's Open Sky Theater; iconic poet and punker Patti Smith at Spreckels; or Billy Corgan's Smashing Pumpkins at Viejas Arena.
Oct. 16: Bombay Bicycle Club and Vacationer at House of Blues, Los Campesinos at Casbah or Wreckless Eric at Soda Bar.
Oct. 17: Stars at House of Blues, the Whigs at the Griffin or ZZ Ward at the Soda Bar. Are you getting the idea? Too many incredible choices ...
Oct. 18: Cold Cave kills at the Casbah or the epic alternative sounds of Exitmusic at Soda Bar. Or, or, or I am hosting Maryjane's Underground at the Hard Rock Hotel with the New Kinetics and SXO. It's free, and now it's sponsored by 619 Vodka ...
Oct. 19: party with electro-rocker Dan Deacon at the Irenic, emo-rockers the Jealous Sound at Soda Bar, Snow Patrol at Harrah's Open Sky Theater and finally Yasiin Bey, aka Mos Def, at 4th & B. Please, don't call him Mos anymore ...
Oct. 20: Rocktoberfest in North Park, featuring Mariachi el Bronx, Transfer, Hyena, the Silent Comedy, Mrs. Magician, Blackout Party, Family Wagon, New Mexico and the Euphoria Brass Band. Presented by the Casbah, West Coast Tavern and FM 94/9.
Oct. 21: darkwavers Crystal Castles at SOMA or ’90s alt-rockers Toadies and Helmet at the Belly Up.
Oct. 22: folktronica artist Beth Orton will be at the House of Blues, Jason Lytle of Grandaddy at Casbah or the chamber pop of Perfume Genius at the Irenic.
Oct. 23: dark rockers Crocodiles at the Casbah.
Oct. 24: legend Bob Dylan at Valley View Casino Center, the garage-rock sounds of Cheap Time at the Casbah or party punkers Matt & Kim with Oberhofer at the House Of Blues.
Oct. 25: Calexico play their brand of Americana/country at the Belly Up. But, most important, I am hosting SoundDiego LIVE at Quality Social with the Styletones, Neon Cough and our Garage to Glory winner. Thanks to Jack Daniels and don't forget to RSVP ...
Oct. 26: Brit rockers Two Door Cinema Club at SOMA.
Oct. 28: Mod's unite when Bruce Foxton of the Jam plays at 4th & B or Omar Rodriguez Lopez (Mars Volta/At the Drive In) is in Middletown at the Casbah.
Oct. 29: John Lydon's Public Image Limited at House of Blues.
Oct. 31: Peter Murphy throws a Halloween party at 4th & B.
