Netflix Gives β€˜Em What They Want: Streaming Plan (And a Price Hike)

The cloud is now raining movies and television programs, via Netflix.

The Los Gatos, CA, company has added a web-first plan for $7.99 a month, according to allthingsd.com. This, as they say, has been much sought-after by webbies, gamers and those who like trees. (Those red envelopes may be iconic, but green they ain't.)

Users can stream shows and movies to game consoles like XBox 360, Wii and PS3 (among others) or you can watch on your laptop. Internet-enabled TVs (like Apple TV or GoogleTV) can also flow the 2-D love.

"We are now primarily a streaming video company delivering a wide selection of TV shows and films over the Internet," said Reed Hastings, Netflix co-founder and CEO.  "Today's action reflects the tremendous customer value we've injected into streaming from Netflix, our initial success with a pure streaming service in Canada for $7.99 a month and what our U.S. members tell us they want."

The red-envelope plans, via US Postal, went up a dollar, as well, which may further damage the Service's ability to make ends meet.

Hey, they don't call the internet 'disruptive' for nothing.
