Officer Accused of Raping Student Resigns

A San Diego police officer accused of raping a Point Loma Nazarene University student has resigned, according to San Diego police.

The alleged victim went to a local hospital and reported that she had been raped last month by two acquaintances, a male San Diego police officer and a woman, according to El Cajon Police Lt. Mark Coit.

The officer, whose name is known but will not be published until he is charged per NBC San Diego policy, resigned from the department March 4 voluntarily , according to Chief  William Lansdowne.

University officials confirmed an on-campus employee is a co-suspect in the alleged rape case. She is suspected of introducing the police officer to the alleged victim.

The co-suspect works at Sodexo, the university’s food service provider.

El Cajon police would not say where in El Cajon the alleged rape occurred, but did say it happened off campus.

There have been no arrests in this case. Investigators are “still waiting for forensic results to get back,” said Coit.

If the evidence shows a crime was committed, that information will be sent to the district attorney's office, and charges could be filed against one or both suspects.

The investigation is ongoing.
