Drivers Kept in Dark About Speedy Secret

A North County parkway is really a highway, but city officials don’t want drivers to know about it, because the speed limit is 65 mph, the North County Times reported.

There are no speed limit signs along Centre City Parkway in Escondido.

"When you post a speed limit, people tend to drive that speed or a little above," the city's director of engineering services Ed Domingue told the paper. "The last thing we'd want to do is post it at 65 mph."

Drivers typically travel about 40 mph, according to Domingue.

It's classified as a highway because it served as U.S. 395 until Interstate 15 was finished less than a mile to the west in 1978. But that archaic designation makes it difficult for the city to lower the speed limit, the paper reported.
