CHP is Cracking Down on Distracted Drivers

Distracted driving kills thousands of people every year and on Monday law enforcement agencies across the state say they plan to crackdown on distracted drivers.

The California Highway Patrol kicked off National Distracted Driving Awareness Month on Monday.

The number one source of driver inattention has to do with wireless devices, said CHP Border Division Chief Jim Abele. He says statistics show drivers who use wireless devices are four times more likely to get into an accident.

"While it seems that it is a simple thing, the reality of it is it can lead to disaster," Abele said.

In 2009, 5474 people were killed on U.S. roadways due to distracted driving, while 448,000 were injured in motor vehicle crashes, Abele said.

The fine for your first ticket is $159, your second ticket for distracted driving is more than $200.

This is the first statewide zero tolerance distracted driving enforcement campaign in California.
