Bicyclist, San Diego Army Veteran on Trek Dies After Texas Accident

A California bicyclist on a nationwide journey to draw attention to the rights of U.S. military veterans has died in a Texas traffic accident.

The Texas Department of Public Safety on Tuesday identified the victim as 48-year-old Stephen Michael Clift of San Diego.

DPS says Clift was struck Thursday night by a vehicle on eastbound Interstate 40 near Groom. Clift was transported to a hospital in Amarillo, where he died on Friday.

Cpl. John Gonzalez says the traffic wreck appears to have been an accident. No charges were immediately filed against the driver.

The Amarillo Globe-News reports Clift, who served in the Army, was on a bicycle journey called March Across America for Homeless Veterans.

No further information was immediately available.
