Driver Plunges into River

A woman was recovering Friday after veering off a freeway, crashing down two steep embankments and ending up in the Sweetwater River Channel.

The accident happened just after 5 p.m. Thursday evening on the Eastbound 54 highway at Highland Avenue in National City.

The driver had some sort of medical problem, and lost control of her car, said National City Firefighters.

She was very lucky to have landed in a shallow part of the river, said Fire Captain Sergio Mora. “I guess she just drove off and it's very fortunate that she didn't roll down the embankment or land upside down in the water.”

The woman suffered no obvious signs of trauma or injury. She was pulled to safety over the dangerous terrain by firefighters using a low-angle rescue system.
