Celebrating the Life of a Labor Leader

San Diego will honor late farm workers' advocate and civil rights leader Cesar Chavez today with a parade and celebration in the city.

The Cesar E. Chavez Parade begins in Sherman Heights, makes its way through Logan Heights and ends in downtown Barrio Logan.

Community activist, educator and civil rights leader Gracia Molina De Pick will serve as grand marshal of the parade. The event will culminate with a community festival featuring music, entertainment and information on worker rights, immigration, health and education in Barrio Logan.

March 28, 2009 at 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Route will begin in Sherman Heights (25th & J St.) proceed south onto Cesar Chavez Pkwy, turn left on Irving Ave., then right onto Sampson St., ending on Logan Ave., at the heart of Historic Downtown Logan Heights.

11th Annual Cesar E Chavez Memorial Breakfast
March 30, 2009 at 7:30 a.m. – 9 a.m.

This year's keynote address will be delivered by UFW co-founder and labor leader Dolores Huerta. Registration is currently underway for the annual Cesar E. Chavez Commemorative Breakfast in honor of late United Farm Workers founder and civil rights hero. This event joins dozens of statewide events in honor of Chavez and the statewide day of service learning created in his honor. Cesar E. Chavez, who along with Dolores Huerta, founded and made it his life work to organize farm workers to attain livable wages and humane working conditions. The breakfast will continue its yearly tradition of honoring the winners of its annual Cesar E. Chavez high school (9-12) essay contest and presenting the Cesar Chavez Visionary Award.
