Coming To “House” This Fall: Inevitably Doomed Romance!

NOTE: SPOILERS AHEAD

If you watch “House” regularly, as I do, you know that this past season ended with Cuddy finally telling House she loves him, and then the two sharing a shockingly tender kiss together. This was so not how I expected House and Cuddy to finally hook up. I expected alcohol to be involved. I also expected a slap fight suddenly turning into sex on the Cuddy’s desk. It just made sense, given their past sexual tension. But an actual kiss? Love? Really? Oh, that can’t last.

But

the show’s producers will try and make a real relationship out of “Huddy.” Ausiello even snagged a shot of the two characters cuddling on the beach. House, cuddling? Dunno how I feel about that.

Katie Jacobs confirmed that House and Cuddy would finally make a go of a relationship next season. “This is real and something that they are going to try,” she said. “It’s something they stayed away from for a long period of time because it’s dangerous and the consequences could be severe. But now they’re going to give it a try.”

Any seasoned TV viewer will tell you that resolved sexual tension almost always signals the death of a show. First, there’s the scene where they do it. And that’s nice. But then comes the wedding and the inevitable baby and then Cousin Oliver, and it’s all over. Ask Jim and Pam over at “The Office” how that’s working out for their show.

HOWEVAH, “House” is a show that has long dared to toy with shark-jumping ideas (ghosts, suicides, bus crashes, dream sequences), and come through by infusing those moments with a great deal of sarcasm and bitterness. There’s little doubt they’ll avoid turning House into some lovey dovey bleeding heart. He’s an inherently dysfunctional human being, which means his relationships are doomed to be likewise. So my personal anticipation grows not for the House-Cuddy pairing, but how that pairing will end up bursting into flames. Because “House” is always best when it’s at its most unpleasant.
