Dan Atkinson, jazz program coordinator for the La Jolla Athenaeum Music & Arts Library, is bringing the best in European jazz to the venue on Feb. 13 with the San Diego debut of the Mats Eilersten Trio.
Mats Eilersten is a virtuoso bassist in the tradition of Gary Peacock, and his group features pianist Harmen Fraanje and drummer Thomas Stronen.
Eilersten last came to San Diego as a member of the Tord Gustavsen Trio, with whom he gained international prominence. Stronen is also a member of the avant/rock/electronics group Food.
"This one is really on the outside of the spectrum," says Atkinson. "Very much contemporary European jazz. This trio was the best group that I heard when I was a guest of the Bergen, Norway jazz festival two years ago."
The Athenaeum Library is located at 1008 Wall St. in La Jolla, Calif.
