San Diego Sockers To Help Furloughed Government Workers

This Sunday is Furloughed Workers Night for the San Diego Sockers. Anybody who is a federal employee or a government contract worker can come to Sundays game, show their government identification and receive one free ticket to Sundays game.

The San Diego Sockers are opening their doors on Sunday to all those impacted by the longest government shutdown in U.S. history.

On Sunday, January 20, when the Sockers host the Turlock Express for a 5:05 p.m. match at Pechanga Arena San Diego, affected federal employees and contract workers can show their government employee ID at the arena box office in exchange for a free ticket for themselves, as well as any child age 8 and under. Any additional tickets for a government employee’s group can be purchased at the discount rate of $12 for a General Admission  ticket, again with a current government employee ID. This offer is good only at the box office on match day.

“So many families in our community are suffering right now, and it is our goal to knock down the wall between making ends meet and treating the family to a fun night out,” said Sockers Chief Marketing Officer Craig Elsten, “With Furloughed Workers Night, we want to give affected families a great chance to relax and enjoy a couple hours worry-free as they watch the Sockers go for another big win.”

“Hard working folks are waiting to get back to their jobs, or even worse, are having to work every day without pay,” said Sockers General Manager Sean Bowers, “This is our chance to thank them for staying strong during these times of uncertainty. We stand with the government worker.”

The Sockers organization believes this is very pro San Diego stance, that this community deserves.

“We are a military town, a government town, there are so many people here that are affected by the furloughs and affected by the shutdown, to us it’s kind of a no-brainer.  If you’re having a hard time paying rent,  making your mortgage payment, putting groceries on the table, well here’s something you do for absolutely free,” said Elsten.

According to the Sockers organization,  the response on social media on has been great, with many people reaching out to indicate they will be showing up to the game.

“Whether we get a hundred people or a thousand, it’s something that I think our community and government in our community deserve,” said Bowers.

Sunday’s match is also Youth Sports Night, with the Sockers honoring our community’s youth sports

Champions before the game. All fans, furloughed or not, receive a Retro Logo Hat at the gate, courtesy of Cal Coast Credit Union. Tickets for Sunday’s match can be purchased by the general public by phone at (866) 799-GOAL, online at Sockers.com, or at the Pechanga Arena San Diego box office.
